Program Description:

ThisDiploma program in HCA provides balanced and complete training in the classroomand supervised clinical experience in a care facility, community setting, athome or care homes for the elderly. HCA’s promote and maintain the health,safety, independence, comfort and wellbeing of individuals and families. PlusHCA’s provide personal care assistance and services in a caring manner thatrecognizes and supports the unique needs, abilities, and background of clientsand their families. Also HCA’s based on a set of fundamental values beliefs,and ethical principles that are consistently reflected in all aspects of theirwork with clients, families and team members alike.

Admission Requirements:

-         Grade12 / mature attitude.

-         IELTS5.5 or above

-         EntranceAssessment or interview.

-         Thefollowing are to be completed prior to the first practice education experience:Emergency First Aid & CPR C.

-         CriminalRecord Check.

-         Immunizationas required by sites of practice education and recommended by BC Center for DiseaseControl: diphtheria and tetanus, polio, hepatitis B, measles, mumps and rubella(MMR), varicella, and influenza Negative TB skin test or chest X-ray

Learning Objectives/Outcomes:

Uponcompletion of the PSW program, graduates will be able to:

Provide person-centered care andassistance that recognizes and respects the Uniqueness of each individualresident or client.

Recognize the role of the PersonalSupport Worker and participate as a member of an inter professional team.

Identify and practice legal, ethicaland moral responsibilities relevant to the Personal Support Worker role.

Use an informed problem-solving approach to provide care andassistance that promotes the physical, psychological, social, cognitive andspiritual well-being of clients/residents and families.

Provide care and assistance forclients/residents experiencing cognitive and/or mental health challenges.

Interact with other members of the health-care team in ways that contribute toeffective working relationships and the achievement of goals.

Methodsof Evaluation:

Students’ progress in the program ismeasured by their successful completion of the courses listed in the programoutlines; a minimum of 70% of the all course marks as well as each assessmentcomponent of the courses is required to successfully complete the program. Please see the individual course assessment methods outlined in the “Coursedescription and outlines”

Completion Requirement:

A minimum of 70% mark for each ofthe program’s courses as indicated in “Students Assessment Methods” as well asa minimum of 80% in attendance as indicated in “Attendance Expectations”

Program duration:

This program duration is 52weeks (18weeks English courses, 32 weeks Health Care Assistant courses). This translatesto 765 hours of Academic studies in class and 2 weeks of practicum.
